PREPARING AND SUBMITTING THE ABSTRACT FORM:
AUTHOR INSTRUCTIONS

Abstracts submitted to the Program Committee of the American Hernia Society will be considered for presentation at the Annual Meeting. Submitted abstracts should convey, as clearly as possible, the purpose(s) of the scientific work and the manner in which the work was performed. The abstract should include the experimental protocol, the methodology used in organizing and designing the study, the results obtained, and finally, the clinical or scientific significance of the project. To provide the Program Committee the maximum opportunity to evaluate an abstract, the following guidelines are suggested.

1. FORMAT: Abstracts are reproduced for the program book in the exact form in which they are submitted. It is imperative that a uniform format be adhered to by all authors. Use the Abstract Transmittal Form provided, fitting all copy within the box; or preferably submit abstract on-line following the directions on the website at www.americanherniasociety.org. Abstracts should not exceed 37 lines and 300 words if no tables or graphs are included. Abstracts which do not comply with the format will be automatically rejected.

For possible inclusion in "Hernia," the text of the abstract must also be provided on disk or submitted on-line.

2. TITLE: Make it short and specific. The body of the abstract should follow logically from the title.

3. INTRODUCTORY SENTENCE: State the hypothesis, purpose, or specific objective of the study. The remainder of the abstract should address the hypothesis, purpose, or stated objective.

4. METHODS: Describe the study design, subjects, and analytic procedures briefly (two to three sentences). The methods described should unquestionably address the state hypothesis, purpose, or objective. A clear documentation of the statistical methodology should accompany the methods/results section with lucid comparison of differences to support the results. Include enough detail to enable the Program Committee to gain a clear understanding and purpose of the methodology.

5. RESULTS: A summary of the results should be in sufficient detail to support the final conclusions. The mean results should be presented in numerical fashion with standard deviations or standard errors of the mean. Numbers of animals, studies, or patients should be noted. Statistical comparisons are mandatory if an abstract is to be competitive. Present the data in sufficient detail for the reader to form conclusions and acknowledge (or disagree with) the interpretation of the author's analysis. If there are sufficient data to display, single-spaced tables are encouraged as these add to the clarity of the abstract. Figures may be helpful with certain types of results if clarity and conciseness can be insured.

6. CONCLUSIONS: The abstract should close with a brief statement of the conclusion(s). Make certain that all conclusions follow logically from the data and that the data presented confirms, refutes, or modifies the purpose or the specific objectives of the study as stated in the introductory sentence.

7. CONSISTENCY: Verify that the entire abstract is internally consistent. All elements should fit into a logical pattern and relate to each other. Check the type of presentation you would like the abstract considered for, keeping in mind that if accepted, the final decision of how the abstract will be presented will be determined by the Program Committee. The Principal Author must sign and print his/her name. Complete the information for the Corresponding Author and Sponsor. Return two copies of Abstract Transmittal Form, plus a disk containing the abstract. Faxes are not acceptable.
